Southern Section Baseball playoffs: The predictions ( LA Times )
Mon, 14 May 2012 15:25:00 PDT
Look for Mater Dei, Cypress and Bonita to come out winners in the top three divisions.

Tue, 15 May 2012 22:07:00 PDT
Mickey Hatcher is dismissed in the wake of a 16-21 start during which the Angels have scored only 134 runs and been shut out a major league-high eight times. Triple-A coach Jim Eppard replaces him.

A second season beckons for high school baseball, softball ( LA Times )
Mon, 14 May 2012 15:00:00 PDT
CIF Southern Section releases playoff pairings, with wild-card games scheduled to begin Tuesday.

It's supposed to be a good thing to be seeded No. 1 for the Southern Section Division 1 baseball playoffs, and Orange Lutheran Coach Eric Borba will gladly accept congratulations. But it doesn't guarantee that the Lancers will make a trip to Dodger Stadium for the championship game June 1.

Chris Mallon is Kennedy's next great catcher, and that says a lot ( LA Times )
Sun, 13 May 2012 17:00:00 PDT
Granada Hills Kennedy High has produced All-City catchers as though it has an assembly line — 10 in all. Chris Mallon, who hit .533 with seven homers and 47 RBIs this year, is sure to make it 11.

There have been 10 All-City catchers produced by Granada Hills Kennedy since the high school opened in 1971, raising the question of whether there is some kind of electromagnetic field transforming its catchers into Ninja-like figures.

UCLA gets Beckman pitcher James Kaprielian to switch loyalties ( LA Times )
Thu, 10 May 2012 16:55:00 PDT
Despite his family's devotion to USC, the top recruit happily is headed from Irvine to Westwood. He is 8-2 this season with a 0.96 earned-run average, two no-hitters and a one-hitter.

The Kaprielians from south Orange County are such loyal fans of USC that when pitcher James Kaprielian of Irvine Beckman was on the mound against the rival University Trojans, who have blue uniforms, his grandmother grumbled, "It's weird seeing Trojans in blue. It isn't right."

Burbank pitcher Daniel Starkand makes the most of ability ( LA Times )
Sun, 6 May 2012 17:30:00 PDT
Senior left-hander, 6 feet 4 and 170 pounds, doesn't light up radar guns with his fastball but uses savvy on the mound. He hasn't given up an earned run in his last 46 innings and has thrown three shutouts this season.

To all the high school pitchers who keep winning games but get no love from the pro baseball scouts because they don't fit into the required mold (a.k.a, throw 90 mph), let me introduce you to your future hero, left-hander Daniel Starkand of Burbank High.

Thu, 3 May 2012 18:22:00 PDT

It's time for families to start finalizing their summer vacation plans. And those with high school football players had better ask one specific question of their coach: "When does my son get time off?"
